MBEMBESI have successfully defended their Godlwayo South Soccer League title with an awards ceremony to be held in Singwambizi on 23 December.
It was yet another close battle for the championship between Mbembesi and Dekezi who kept swapping the top two positions throughout the season. Mbembesi, captained by Nkosilathi Tshili were confirmed as GSSL champions on 1 December when Dekezi were beaten 1-0 by Bambanani.
This meant the Fidelis Mudzingwa coached Mbembesi, who finished with 59 points are champions again for this season while Dekezi, runners up in 2018 again finished in second place a point behind. Dekezi could have been champions had they overcome Bambanani but they failed to take advantage and now have to contend with being runners up again.
Bhekimpilo Maranda Sithole, the GSSL board chairman said it has been a difficult year for the league with some teams not being able to fulfill their matches due to lack of transport while hooliganism also spoiled things for the people of Insiza South.
A congress will take place in February next year where these issues will be attended to.
“The year 2018 was a difficult one in our league as some teams failed to fulfill their matches. Violence also marred our games.
As Godlwayo we agree we failed together but we are having our congress in February and it is where we will iron out everything,’’ Sithole said.
He called upon others who come from Insiza South to come through to assist the teams in the GSSL in the areas where they are struglging, especially the issue of transport.
Sithole, a Bulawayo based businessman sponsors the GSSL together with the South Africa based duo of Kossam Mavuna Ndlovu and Zibusiso Majankwe Ncube, with three calling themselves MMM.
A tournament will also take place on the day of the awards ceremony with the sponsors to hand pick the teams that will take part.
