Mberengwa teacher in court for ‘fondling’ pupil

The teacher, Takawira Jonas (34), was yesterday arraigned before Mberengwa magistrate Mr Peter Madiba facing an indecent assault charge.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded out of custody on his own cognisance to 30 November 2012.

For the State, Mrs Sarah Matonga said on 6 November this year, the girl was left by her guardians alone at their school staff house when the accused, Jonas, visited the house.

The court heard that when Jonas discovered that the girl was alone, he grabbed and dragged her into one of the bedrooms and started fondling her breasts.

While in the process of sexually abusing the girl, Jonas heard some footsteps and stopped the abuse, the court heard.

Mrs Matonga said Jonas then threatened the girl and said  he would  influence the examiners to fail her Grade Seven exams if she reported the matter to anyone before he fled.

The matter only came to light recently when the girl’s guardian then interviewed the girl after she discovered a sudden change in the minor’s behaviour.

She then revealed that she was abused by the accused Jonas.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Jonas arrest.
