Mbira diva helps the needy

The CD has both afro-pop sounds and house music, the sound that has taken over most dance floors.
“I am back home to promote my new album as well as give back to the community which I grew up in. I was touched by the poor who could not afford to send their children to school.
“Through the foundation which raises money overseas through festivals and smaller events we managed to raise a bit of cash which we have given to children at Warren Park D Primary, Rugare High School, Kambuzuma High School and Muda Primary School.
We have at least 23 children who have benefited from the foundation since we formed in 2003,” she said.
The philanthropist said it was important for her organisation to work with other Zimbabweans to try and raise money for the poor.
“The organisation is music aligned and we are always looking at ways through which we can assist those who cannot afford decent education. In August I shall go on a nine day walk to fund raise for the children,” she said.
Describing her music, the 35-year-old singer who is based in Norwich in North-East London, said she mixes Shona and English to reach out to her fans. “I have worked with some of Zimbabwe’s most accomplished artistes the likes of Ephat Mujuru when we toured Japan, Stella Chiweshe and Dr Thomas Mapfumo. So I can’t say one person moulded me because there are a lot of people who made me what I am today,” she said.
Mudeka and her two other sisters who were featured on Dr Mapfumo’s two videos “Chipo Ndechangu” and “Vanhu Vatema” come from a rich musical background. Their grandmother Irene Mudeka was a musician.
They started off at the age of 14 as members of a dance group called “Idwala Elikhulu” and later joined the Blacks Unlimited around 1993 until 1995 when they left for overseas, one of her sisters is now based in Belgium while the other lives in the United States.
Her follow-up album is due this September and she hopes to perform at the Harare International Festival of the Arts in future.
