Zimbabwe’s iconic mbira outfit, Mbira DzeNharira, kicked off the 2026 season with a bang, holding a sold-out gig at The Yard (formerly Bar Rouge) in the heart of Long Cheng Plaza, Harare.
Fronted by Tendayi “Samaita” Gahamadze, the group delivered an exhilarating performance last Friday, ushering fans into a vibrant weekend filled with song and dance.
It was a marvel to witness the group take fans down memory lane by performing nostalgic hits such as “Ndoenda Kwambuya,” “Muchati Kudiiko,” “Magamba,” “Zvowoenda Harare,” “Karimudande,” and “Toputika Neshungu,” much to the delight of the audience. Clad in their trademark animal skins, Gahamadze and his crew proved to be true cultural ambassadors, mesmerising a full house and receiving both praise and gifts from the crowd. Loyal fans showered them with wads of cash, demonstrating how much they had missed this iconic mbira outfit.
In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Gahamadze expressed his gratitude for the fans’ unwavering support. “To be honest, I can’t thank my old and new friends enough after this epic show,” he shared. “We are just starting the season, and it’s a marvel to kick off in such a way. I didn’t expect this large crowd considering it’s January. Having such a cheering crowd is a boon for those who love our culture.”
Gahamadze, who has been in the industry for over 30 years, sees himself as an emissary sent to teach Africans about their traditions. “What I have witnessed in my life is magical because we were sent to teach people Ubuntu, love and unity through music,” he stated. “I will not stop this special calling because our music has touched the hearts of millions and fostered respect for our traditions. Our culture is rich, and we are only playing our part to raise awareness through mbira music,” he asserted.
