PRESIDENT Mnangagwa will officially open the newly constructed interchange at the former Mbudzi roundabout in Harare over the next 2 weeks, as the massive infrastructure project is almost complete, with contractors putting on the final  touches.

Upon completion, the interchange will be named the Trabablas Interchange. The interchange represents an investment of US$88 million and is strategically located at the intersection of Simon Mazorodze Road, Chitungwiza Road and High Glen Road.

It features 15 completed bridges, designed to alleviate traffic congestion in southern Harare.

The interchange is expected to greatly improve traffic flow, reduce transit times, and minimise accidents in the area.

The project is funded through local financial institutions and was executed by a joint venture of three local construction companies: Tensor Systems, Fossil Contracting and Masimba Construction, under the banner of Tefoma Construction.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona recently confirmed the developments surrounding the interchange.

“On Trabablas Interchange, I tell you, it’s something remarkable. You will see for yourself shortly.

“We are preparing to invite His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa to commission this project,” he said.

In addition to the Mbudzi Interchange, plans for a flyover at the junction of Simon Mazorodze and Willowvale roads are at an advanced stage.

A 3D model of the flyover is being finalised, which aims to improve traffic efficiency and safety.

The Ministry of Transport said this infrastructure will enhance traffic flow, benefiting motorists and pedestrians.

Mobilisation for the construction of a Grade Separation Structure (flyover) at the Simon Mazorodze/Willowvale Road junction is already underway.

The project is a key initiative to address traffic challenges in the area.

Rehabilitation works are also in progress along Simon Mazorodze Road, extending from the Chinzou roundabout to the Harare Main Post Office.

This is part of the broader Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge road upgrade project.

Contractors are actively working on various sections, including a 19km stretch from Masvingo Urban towards Beitbridge, where surfacing is underway.

Construction of the Manyame River Bridge on the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Road is progressing, with plans to open it to traffic by the end of June. Other major road projects include the Harare-Beitbridge Highway, which has 88km still outstanding, and various rehabilitation efforts across the region.

Further, site clearance is ongoing for the Harare-Mazowe Road dualisation project, and surfacing works are in progress on the Birchenough-Murambinda Road and Golden Valley Sanyati Road projects.

The Ministry has indicated that construction of a Grade Separation Structure at the Simon Mazorodze/Remembrance Drive (ZBC) intersection will begin in January 2026.

This is aimed at further easing traffic congestion in the area.

Overall, the Mbudzi Interchange and associated projects signal a transformative phase for transportation in Harare, aimed at enhancing traffic efficiency and safety for all road users.
