McDonald played in the last two Sunshine Tour events managing to make the cut in the first attempt and was expected to be one of the local players to bet on.
The absence of the former St George’s student will whittle down the chances for a home victory.
Playing in the Champions Tour in the United States, McDonald remains one of the experienced local professionals who could have been counted on for a home victory in the Zimbabwe Open.
Last year the McDonald could have won his maiden career tournament at the eGolf Tour, formerly known as the Taheel Tour, but missed by a single shot to American Kevin Foley in the Needles Classic. McDonald used to be at Virginia Tech which has groomed local talented golfers like Brendon de Jonge and the up-and-coming Scott Vincent.
