McGregor and Mayweather ‘arguing’ fight rules for £130m rematch

Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather are said to be going back and forth over fight rules for a blockbuster boxing rematch which could pocket the Irishman £130million five years after their first meeting.

The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion and the 50-0 former professional boxer starred in the second highest-selling combat sports pay-per-view event of all time back in 2017 in which Mayweather won via a tenth round TKO.

With McGregor since returning to the UFC with three defeats from four bouts and Mayweather featuring in a string of exhibitions – a rematch is on the cards.

The Sun report that while some terms have been agreed, including a fight weight of 155lbs others have not been decided including whether Mayweather will put his perfect professional record on the line

McGregor is said to want the fight to run across 10 rounds rather than 12 like the previous bout, in which Mayweather made around £250m to the Irishman’s £80m.

The Mail report that Mayweather has offered McGregor an improved £130m for a rematch, which could well be the final time he enters a boxing ring having turned 45 in February

Mayweather’s last exhibition came in a non-scored bout against former sparring partner Don Moore after the same result against YouTuber Logan Paul.

Prior to that was his first-round demolition of Tenshin Nasukawa, with McGregor not fighting since July of 2021 having broken his tibia in his second defeat to Dustin Poirier.

Speaking to Sky Sports earlier this year, McGregor, 34, insisted that although he loves boxing, he would be returning to the UFC octagon in his next outing.

He said: “Boxing is my first love in combat sports. I had such a great time the last time I was out there. Obviously, my return will be in the octagon for UFC – that story is far from over, in fact it’s just being written, it is just the beginning.

“But, boxing, for sure I will grace the squared circle again in the future.” – Daily Star
