McLaren only SA in ICC Champions Trophy team

Cape Town — Proteas all-rounder Ryan McLaren is the only South African named in the ICC Champions Trophy Team of the Tournament.
McLaren scored 83 runs and took eight wickets in the tournament, which ended in disappointing fashion for South Africa after losing by seven wickets to hosts England in the semi-finals. According to the NDTV Sports website, India — who won the event by beating England by five runs in the final — have the most number of representatives with five.

Their captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, was named as leader of the team, which was selected by a five-man ICC selection panel that comprised Geoff Allardice (ICC General Manager of Cricket and Chairperson of the Event Technical Committee), Javagal Srinath (former India fast bowler and ICC Elite Panel match referee), Aleem Dar (ICC Elite Panel umpire), Scyld Berry (Wisden Editor from 2008-2011 and Sunday Telegraph correspondent) and Stephen Brenkley (correspondent of The Independent and Independent On Sunday).

“It was an extremely difficult task for the panel to pick a team of 11 players from the quality of players who featured in this tournament. As the selection criteria was the performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013, some of the best players had to be left out, though they would walk very easily into any World XI,” said Allardice.
