MDC concedes election defeat

A TOP official of the MDC led by Professor Welshman Ncube has conceded defeat in the just-ended harmonised elections, passing them as having been free and fair.
MDC director for policy Qubani Moyo was contesting for the Insiza North constituency House of Assembly seat which Zanu-PF’s Cde Andrew Langa won with 9 914 votes against his 1 489.

Party leader Prof Ncube garnered a paltry 92 637 votes (2,68 percent) in the Presidential poll, which President Mugabe won resoundingly with 61 percent while closest contender MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai garnered 33 percent.

Zanu-PF won 160 votes in the poll, securing itself more than two thirds majority in the House of Assembly where the MDC-T garnered 49 seats.
Posting on his facebook page, Moyo said it was time to concede defeat and move on.

“The people made their choices and we respect them but still believe that we have the best team. But democracy is about making people choose whoever they want and they did,” he said.

“Thanks to all the colleagues who gave me support and encouragement, it just was not our time,” he said.
Moyo said unlike other losers who had nowhere to fall back on, he would pursue his studies.

“Meanwhile it feels good to be back at Nust (National University of Science and Technology). In class once with my Masters class. Am really enjoying it,” he said.

The United States, Britain, Australia and other countries that imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe have sided with the MDC-T in rejecting the Zanu-PF victory, demanding that the polls should be re-run.

Tsvangirai has said his party will challenge in court the results of the election, which African election observers endorsed as having been a free expression of the will of the people.

Responding to Moyo’s post, one Siphatisiwe Mpofu said she “wished that Tsvangirai had a mind like yours.”

Analysts have said lack of something to fall back on by Tsvangirai was influencing his decision to reject the results of the poll since he did not contest for election in either the National Assembly or Senate.

Tsvangirai, who the private media made him believe he would win the Presidential poll resoundingly, has since rejected the result of the election in which he was a willing participant, saying he had evidence of rigging. — New Ziana
