THE MDC-T ship is fast sinking amid indications that more officials, including parliamentarians, are on their way out. This is not good news for former trade unionist Mr Morgan Tsvangirai, as it follows the resignation last Friday of its Bulawayo provincial chairperson Mr Gorden Moyo and former women’s assembly chair Lucia Matibenga at the weekend.
There are indications that national and provincial members in Manicaland also dumped Mr Tsvangirai at the weekend.
These include provincial secretary Ms Juliet Matope and chairperson for Mutare North and provincial member, Mr Gabriel Chiwara. Other provincial members like Mr Patrick Sagandira and Ms Janet Jekese have also dumped Mr Tsvangirai’s camp.
“This we are doing for strategic purposes. We have agreed that our members whom Tsvangirai thinks are still with him will be dumping him every week as they announce their joining of the renewal cause.”
Another source added: “Since the Speaker of the National Assembly indicated that he was not going to involve himself in our politics, a number of MPs and councillors are now coming out in the open knowing that they would not lose their seats.”
Spokesperson for the Biti-led camp, Mr Jacob Mafume, said they meant business.
“A lot more people are now saying what we have been saying all along that there is need to renew the party, the country and politics. There are a lot of MPs and councillors whom we are engaging and they are going to be making the announcements on their own because some of them are still consulting with their constituents and conscience but all is set for them to join us,” said Mr Mafume.
But Mr Douglas Mwonzora, the spokesperson for the Tsvangirai faction, said those leaving the party were already with Mr Biti when he launched the renewal team.
“Those who are leaving are not new people joining him but are people who were with him at the Mandel meeting,” he said.
