MDC-T national executive yesterday summoned the Midlands South executive for a briefing in Harare as the party moves in to try and quell serious divisions rocking the party in the province. The primary elections for councillors in Gweru were abandoned on Sunday amid demonstrations from party supporters who were accusing the party of imposing candidates.
Sources within MDC-T told Chronicle yesterday that the party’s national executive had summoned the Midlands South provincial executive to a briefing on the violence and demonstrations that have marred the party’s primary elections in the province.
The sources said the party was also considering an election re-run in most parts of the province following complaints by party supporters.
“The party’s Midlands provincial executive is in Harare right now where they have been summoned so that they can brief the national executive on the causes of demos and divisions that are rocking the province. I have received information that the national executive is also considering an election re-run in most areas,” said the source.
The source said the meeting was also meant to discuss primary elections complaints.
Among the constituencies where supporters have raised complaints is the Gweru Urban constituency which was won by former Gweru Mayor, Mr Sesil Zvidzayi who beat the sitting MP, Mr Roderick Rutsvara.
“Mr Zvidzayi is said to have manipulated the names of people who participated in the election when he beat Mr Rutsvara. He (Mr Zvidzayi) is the party’s national elections director and is accused of having tampered with the voter’s roll which saw some people who were not in the party structures participating in the voting process,” said the source.
MDC-T’s Midlands provincial elections director, Mr Obert Tachi Ncube confirmed that the provincial executive was in Harare.
“I am in a meeting in Harare and the issue of when the primary elections for Gweru council candidates will be held is on the agenda. You can contact me tomorrow (today) that is when I will be back in Gweru,” he said.
