on Wednesday appeared in court.
Chipo Munyaki (39) Tamare Gomo (45) and Tecla Bomba (32) denied assault charges when they appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo. They were remanded in custody to June 17. Appearing for the State, Mr Henry Muringani opposed bail arguing the trio was facing a serious offence, which is politically motivated.
“Considering the current atmosphere with elections pending, their release will promote the use of violence. If granted bail, they will endanger the life of the complainant,” said Mr Muringani.
Charges against the three arose on June 1 when Frank Dehwe (30) was walking along Chitungwiza Road when he met the trio in the company of four other people.
The trio is supporting one Philip Mutoti in the MDC-T’s primary elections while Dehwe is an ardent supporter of another aspiring candidate Faro Kasambara. They allegedly confronted Dehwe and started accusing him of prohibiting them from campaigning for their preferred candidate.
During the melee, the three floored Dehwe to the ground with punches. Dehwe tried to escape but was overpowered and was continuously assaulted and left him lying by the road side.
