MDC youths on Sunday stormed the house of former party deputy chairperson Frank Chamunorwa in Harare demanding that he hands over a vehicle that he got during his tenure with the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee (Jomic.) The youths, during a press conference on the same day announced that they were targeting former party members who left with assets. They singled out Chamunorwa and former party director of policy and research Qhubani Moyo, saying they wanted to repossess the vehicles they left with.

Chamunorwa who resigned from MDC after he was fingered as part of a gang of four accused of rebelling against leader Professor Welshman Ncube, yesterday confirmed the incident, saying he made a police report after the incident. The other alleged gang of four members include former secretary general Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga, former spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube and former national chairperson Goodrich Chimbaira.

The youths also passed a resolution to push for the recalling of Misihairabwi-Mushonga from representing the party in the national assembly, accusing her of fanning divisions and failing to represent the people of Matabeleland South.

Chamunorwa said the youths arrived at his residence at midday in a car belonging to MDC youth chairperson Gideon Mandaza and told him that they had come to collect the vehicle. “I saw a red Toyota sedan. Two scruffy looking youths donning T shirts emblazoned with Ncube’s face came out of the vehicle and walked towards my gate.

“I went outside to inquire what they wanted and they told me they were coming from MDC to collect the truck. I asked who had sent them and they said they were acting on their own. I told them that besides the car which I was given by the government, I also got phones and a laptop and asked them why they were only interested in the truck,” said Chamunorwa.

“I pointed out to them that the vehicle was issued by government and therefore didn’t belong to MDC. Already some of the youths were sitting on the bonnet of the vehicle. I told them I had nothing else to discuss with them and returned to my house. At that point they started rattling my gate.” Chamunorwa said the youths only fled when they heard a colleague of his phoning the police.

“I later filed a report with the police. I think somehow we’re being targeted because some sections of the party blame us for the recent resignations of senior officials but we’ve nothing to do with that,” he said. Mandaza was yesterday not reachable for comment. MDC national spokesperson Kurauone Chihwayi said he was not aware of the incident.
