adminMore than two decades ago, the bold MM Deluxe duo, Mdu Masilela and Mandla “Spikiri” Mofokeng, took the music scene by storm and broke new ground. On Sunday, the pair, who became the pioneers of kwaito, will receive special achievement awards at the South African Music Awards (Sama) at Sun City.
Masilela, the self-proclaimed kwaito godfather, said he was heartened by the honour while he was still alive.
“The award comes as a complete surprise. It feels good that someone has recognised my contribution. When I started in music I didn’t do it to get awards but it was for fun.
“This award simply gives me the green light to continue doing what I do best, which is to entertain the people through music.”
Masilela of the Chomi Ya Bana fame has so far released nine albums, including a live DVD, and also made a name for himself, producing and arranging for other artistes such as MaWillies, Mashamplani, Skeem and the late Brown Dash.
Mofokeng started out as a dancer for the legendary Sello “Chicco” Twala in 1985 before cutting a niche as an influential producer and recording artiste.
He is behind the commercial successes of groups and artistes such as Bongo Maffin, Kabelo, Teargas, Trompies and Thandiswa Mazwai.
Mofokeng said the Sama was a huge honour.
“This award is even bigger than the Metro FM Awards I got earlier.
“It’s also important since I will be celebrating 30 years in the industry.
“People took notice of the good work I do and to be regarded as a pioneer of kwaito is an honour. It has been a bumpy road and I never stopped doing what I love and will continue this journey for years to come.”
As a co-director at the Kalawa Jazzmee label, Mofokeng has overseen the careers of acts such as Boom Shaka, Brothers of Peace, Mafikizolo, Mahoota vs Vetkuk, Professor, Uhuru, and Black Motion.
Another lifetime honouree will be the late jazzman Zim Ngqawana. -DailySun.
