China’s slowing economic growth, also referred to as “the new normal’’ will provide an opportunity for it to transfer technology and help in the industrialisation of developing countries as it seeks to implement its “One Belt and One Road’’ initiative.

This emerged during the Media Cooperation Forum on “One Belt and One Road” hosted by the People’s Daily that opened in Beijing yesterday.

China’s “One Belt and One Road” initiative is meant to usher in a new economic era that sees the Asian country being an undisputed geopolitical powerhouse in the region.

Addressing the forum, vice chairman of the Communist Party of China and head of the International Department of the Central Committee Mr Wang Jiurui, said conditions had changed since the olden day Maritime Silk Road of the last century.

“Intensified global changes require regional cooperation. The meeting of civilisations will create new patterns of development.

“Some experts are still doubtful of China’s intentions, but I want to correct that. China is not seeking to change or control, but to carry the agenda for development,” said Mr Wang.

He said China was calling for the creation of common consensus and peace.

Delegates called for greater media cooperation as new opportunities are created through the new synergies.

The “One Belt and One Road’’ initiative was introduced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013 when he visited central and south eastern Asian countries.

In March 2015, the Chinese government issued the “Vision and Actions on Jointly Building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road’’ which, comprehensively elaborates on the content and layout of the “One Belt and One Road’’.

Inspired by this vision, the People’s Daily hosted this Media Cooperation Forum, with the theme “Common Destiny and New Patterns of Cooperation’’.

The forum aims at deepening the media cooperation among the “One Belt and One Road” countries to facilitate the construction of the “One Belt and One Road”.

More than 160 foreign guests from 60 countries and international organisations as well as 122 mainstream media are attending the forum.
