THE media plays a key role in shaping public discourse and driving engagement around sustainable development issues, permanent secretary for Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Mr Simon Masanga has said.
In a speech read on his behalf by Ms Sylocious Chaturuka, the deputy director SDGs and Agenda 2063 Unit in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour, and Social Welfare at a media workshop on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2063 reporting in Masvingo, Mr Masanga said by empowering media professionals with the tools and knowledge they need, the ministry can ensure that they effectively communicate and advocate for the transformative agendas, making a real impact in communities.
He also said one of the key outcomes of media capacitation was the ability to raise awareness and understanding of the SDGs and Agenda 2063 among the public.
“Informed journalists are crucial for translating complex issues into relatable narratives, enabling citizens to grasp the significance of these goals and their implications for local contexts,” he said.
“This understanding fosters informed public participation and drives action toward sustainable development.
“As we navigate our agenda, we will deepen our understanding of the Voluntary Local Review process, which complements the Voluntary National Review by capturing and reflecting local experiences.
“The VLR ensures that our development efforts are grounded in the realities faced by our communities, making it crucial for achieving the SDGs and ensuring that no one is left behind. “We will also explore effective communication strategies to help media professionals convey the significance of the SDGs and Agenda 2063 to diverse audiences.”
Mr Masanga said understanding how to present complex information in an accessible manner was key to resonating with local communities.
He said as a ministry, they will focus on enhancing their data literacy.
“The ability to analyse and interpret reliable data will enable us to provide insightful commentary that drives public awareness and accountability,” Mr Masanga said.
“By equipping ourselves with these essential skills, we can elevate the quality of our reporting and contribute meaningfully to the discourse on sustainable development. We will discuss the importance of collaboration among media, Government, and civil society.
“Building partnerships is vital for enhancing our capacity to report on these critical issues and fostering a more inclusive dialogue around sustainable development. Together, we can create a robust network that amplifies our efforts and ensures that all voices are heard.”
