Meet Legendary Sound DJs

IF one is an avid follower of Zim dancehall, they would probably know two dances – the Magetsi and Chameleon. However, the creators of the dances – Team Penga Penga are relatively unknown by the legion of Zim dancehall enthusiasts. These dances are usually performed at Legendary Sounds’ shows as they accompany DJ Smylie’s songs – Magetsi and Chameleon which are popular at different parties and nightspots across the country.

The Team Penga Penga duo comprising Sizzla “Mr Famous” and Booby Zee are the faces behind the exhilarating dances which always leave revellers asking for more.
In an interview with Chronicle Showbiz, the duo said they were motivated to come up with dances after watching numerous Jamaican music videos. From there they learnt diverse dance moves and decided to work on their own.

Twenty-four year old Bobby Zee (real name Bobby Hussein) who hails from Tanzania described their dances as a hybrid of most popular Jamaican dances such as the Skip-T0-Ma-Lou by QQ feat Ding Dong, Sweep and Rubba Bounce by Elephant Man.

“We sit down and watch music videos and when we see a dance move that is good, we then incorporate it on our dances. This is how the Chameleon came about, we were sitting watching videos at Smylie’s home and we took notes and perfected the dance,” said Bobby Zee.

He started dancing in 2002. He said he became a more serious dancer four years ago when Legendary Sounds DJ, Badman B saw him dance at a show in Harare.
He said besides dance, Team Penga Penga sing in two languages, Swahili and Shona. They have a project in the pipeline which they hope to release this year.

Sizzla (real name Regis Ruzvidzo) said he was scouted for by Smylie who convinced him to join Legendary Sounds.
“I was an MC at a club called Ashpets in Harare and DJ Smylie called me asking me to join his band.

“I was excited and have never looked back ever since,” he said.
