Francis, affectionately known by his legion of fans as Slomo, a sobriquet for his slow motion moves, made his name at Alick Macheso’s Orchestra Mberikwazvo and today, after walking out of that band, he has perfected the art at Orchestra Dendera Kings.
He has become the master of imitation or mimicry so much that even without using words you can tell, even in your drunken stupor that he is imitating Dick “Cde Chinx” Chingaira or the late Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo.
Of course, the missing stunt is that of the legendary Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi and Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo.
He imitates his former paymaster Macheso, Suluman Chimbetu, the late Dhewa, Hosiah Chipanga, “Cde Chinx” and many more artistes.
To show his versatility, Slomo can speak just like Macheso, strum the bass guitar the way Macheso does and is able to copy just about every other musician, much to the delight of the crowds.
“Iwe Suluman watora Slomo, zvakafanana nebhora nhasi riri uko mangwana riri uko kusvika uchadzoka pano!” is one of the many chants Slomo uses when mimicking Macheso.
Fans who have been thronging the Orchestra Dendera Kings shows have been wowed by his antics, which have become part of his act at live shows.
