Meeting to expel MDC-T councillors postponed

VICTORIA Falls Municipality has postponed indefinitely a special full council meeting to officially expel three MDC-T councillors who were sacked by Local Government and Urban Development minister, Dr Ignatius Chombo recently.
MDC-T expelled the three councillors in December after they were accused of voting for Zanu-PF councillor, Sifiso Mpofu, as the resort town’s mayor and later wrote a letter to Dr Chombo asking him to expel them from council since they were no longer party members.
They allegedly defied an MDC-T directive to vote for the party’s candidate Margaret Valley.

Dr Chombo then wrote a letter to the council backing MDC-T’s plans to expel the councillors namely deputy mayor, Norris Nyathi and Councillors Rich Mguni (Ward 5) and Robson Salimu (Ward 8).

After receiving the letter from Dr Chombo, council was supposed to call for a meeting to deliver the news to the councillors.
The Mayor Clr Mpofu yesterday confirmed that council had indeed received a letter from Dr Chombo regarding the expulsion of the three councillors.

He, however, said the special full council meeting – planned to bring the news to the trio – had been postponed indefinitely to allow a legal process initiated by the councillors to be completed.

“The meeting has been postponed indefinitely. There are some legal developments that are taking place since the councillors appealed against the decision to expel them. So we are waiting for that process to take its due course,” said Clr Mpofu.
