Mega farewell planned for Chief Justice Malaba

TODAY, history unfolds as a special sitting of the Constitutional Court is convened to bid farewell to Chief Justice Luke Malaba, marking the conclusion of an extraordinary judicial journey.

This occasion celebrates the retirement of a man whose name has become synonymous with unwavering commitment to the law and the administration of justice.

At 75, Chief Justice Malaba steps down in accordance with Section 186(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, which mandates retirement at this milestone unless extended.

Five years ago, he took the option to extend his term, but now, an indelible era has reached its sunset.

His career spanning four decades will be enshrined in the annals of judicial legacy, cemented by the profound impact he has made on the country’s legal landscape.

The ceremonial proceedings today are no ordinary affair.

A special sitting is a rare and significant event reserved for pivotal moments such as inaugurating judicial terms or honouring the retirement of titans of the bench.

In this instance, luminaries from across the region have gathered to bear witness, including Namibia’s Chief Justice Peter Shivute, Malawi’s Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda, and Dr Willard Mwemba, the COMESA chief executive officer.

At the stroke of midnight, Chief Justice Luke Malaba will vacate his office, fulfilling the constitutional mandate in its entirety.
