Meke seeks revival at CAPS

JUST under two years ago, Tinotenda Meke was touted as a fast-rising winger, who was destined for foreign football leagues.

A Mufakose businessman even put Meke’s poster on the rear screen of his kombi, in appreciation of the player who had mesmerised defenders at the 2024 COSAFA Cup.

He was only 20, and turning out for modest local side GreenFuel, but Meke still found the courage to put on some dazzling performances for Zimbabwe at the COSAFA Cup.

Moves followed and the Mufakose-bred star was snapped up by 2023 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions Ngezi Platinum Stars, who lined him up as one of their key players for their 2024 CAF Champions League campaign.

All of a sudden, the light dimmed and Meke disappeared from the radar.

A spell at Simba Bhora didn’t produce the desired results.

Just when all was pointing negative, a silver lining shone and the former Cranborne Bullets player made a move that could revive his fading career.

Meke penned a two-year deal with high spenders CAPS United on Wednesday and is part of the Makepekepe squad that will be in camp in Malawi for the next two weeks.

The left-footed player adds on the growing list of new signings at CAPS United.

CAPS United chief executive officer, Morton Dodzo, said Meke was now on their books ahead of the 2026 Premiership season.

“I can confirm that CAPS United have signed Tinotenda Meke and he is part of the squad that travelled to Malawi for the pre-season camp,” said Dodzo.

Meke joins a CAPS United side that is on a rebuilding exercise following years of underperforming.

After appointing former Ngezi Platinum Stars coach, Takesure Chiragwi, as their oach late last year, CAPS United went on a shopping spree, bringing in several players, mostly from the Mhondoro platinum miners.

Among those who have signed for Makepekepe include the ex-Ngezi quartet of Obriel Chirinda, Richard Hachiro, Kudzai Chigwida and Talent Chamboko.

The former FC Platinum duo of keeper Wallace Magalane and Davison Marowa is also now at the Green Machine.

Meke comes in with pace down the wings.

The Mufakose-bred player arrived in the Premiership with Cranborne Bullets in 2023.

When the army side were relegated at the end of that season Meke moved to GreenFuel in Chisumbanje.

He also had a stint at Simba Bhora.

His move back to the capital could unlock the potential that Meke has always shown since 2023 when he played under Nesbert “Yabo” Saruchera at Bullets.
