adminJohannesburg — North West premier Thandi Modise has appealed to men to do annual screening and testing for breast cancer.
“Though male breast cancer is rare, men can develop the disease and should be aware that they should seek care if they develop a breast lump,” Modise has said, according to a statement from her office on Sunday.
She was speaking at the second annual North West Province BRICS Charity Golf Challenge in Mahikeng on Saturday.
“Research has shown that men who develop a breast lump delay seeing their doctor longer than a comparable woman with similar symptoms,” she was quoted as saying.
The provincial health department would develop a programme to create awareness of male breast cancer and then monitor how many men went for screening and testing at public health facilities, her spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele said.
Funds raised at the charity golf day, which was aimed at raising cancer awareness, would go to various charities and foundations including the Cancer Association of SA, and the Kgaratlho Home for the Blind. — Sapa.
