MEN URGED TO TAKE LEADING ROLE IN FIGHT AGAINST GBV

MEN have been urged to play a leading role in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The call was made during the awards ceremony, Men As Role Models, Champions For Change, which was held on Monday by Shamwari Yemwanasikana.

The awards were supported by the Canadian Embassy in Zimbabwe, among other partners.

The awards ceremony was held as part of the commemorations of the 16 days of activism against GBV.

Shamwari Yemwanasikana were celebrating their 10th year anniversary.

At least 16 men, from different sectors, were honoured during the awards ceremony which ran under the theme, ‘Celebrating The Unsung Heroes Fighting For A Gender-Equal World’.

Speaking during the ceremony, Canadian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Adler Aristilde, hailed the male champions.

“Raising awareness on GBV is an important step towards gender equality and we need everyone to join in this awareness.

“It is important that we acknowledge and celebrate these 16 men who are challenging the negative social norms against gender equality.

“I commend everyone to join us in celebrating their effort,” he said.

Shamwari Yemwanasikana director Ekenia Chifamba commended efforts by all the stakeholders and individuals for pushing the agenda towards gender equality.

“We say, congratulations to our Champions for Change award winners, leading the charge against GBV and gender inequality.

“You are making a difference in denouncing GBV against women and girls in Zimbabwe.”

“This an honour and celebration of remarkable men,” she said.

Shamwari Yemwanasikana board chairperson, Advocate Patony Musendo, praised men for taking part in the fight against GBV.

“We honour individuals and gender equality is essential for development and it’s a foundation for stronger communities.

“These men stood up, spoke out and took action against deep-rooted norms that perpetuate inequality.

“The idea is empowering girls and young women to be active agents of their own development and realise their full potential.”
