JEALOUS TOMASI, a documented and well-known psychiatric patient, who was released back into society after a 12-year stint in the Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison Psychiatric Unit, has been returned to the mental institution after committing another double murder.
Tomasi was committed to the psychiatric ward after a special verdict had been returned on a murder he committed in 2008 while mentally incapacitated.
He had allegedly killed a fellow villager, Wellington Beremauro, who was a member of the neighbourhood watch.
Two years after his release, while showing some normalcy he committed two other murders which saw him returning to court charged with two counts of murder.
It is alleged that on September 29, 2022, Tomasi retired to bed in the company of his girlfriend when he heard an altercation of some other people from outside his makeshift cabin at the mining site.
Tomasi woke up promptly and impulsively steered into action by uninvitedly joining in the fight.
He then snapped and axed one of the people who were fighting.
Another neighbour was attracted to the scene by the commotion..
He was also allegedly savagely axed to death.
Tomasi fled the scene.
He was later arrested and taken to Chikurubi Psychiatric Unit on July 12, 2023 under the Mental Health Act.
Psychiatric doctor, Dr Mazorodze, evaluated Tomasi on February 25, 2025 and certified him fit to stand trial and be discharged into a relative’s care and custody.
The doctor’s report prompted the office of the Prosecutor General to proceed with Tomasi’s prosecution at the High Court.
The High Court ruled that after going through the evidence provided before it, there is need for Tomasi further management at the Psychiatric Unit.
“That being the case, we strongly feel that mental evaluation and certification by a single expert, though respected, is not sufficient.
“The accused needs to go under further management and treatment.
“The authorities mentioned in S29 of the Act must comply with the provisions of s29(4) to 29(7) speaking to the mandate to place the accused before a special board which will in turn place him before the Mental Health Review Tribunal,” said justice Catherine Bachi-Mzawazi.
