A 30-YEAR-OLD man, who is believed to be mentally challenged, was arrested on Saturday for attempted murder after he allegedly threw a seven-year-old girl into a well in Old Tafara.
Police say Anyway Kufakunesu assaulted Chiedza Kamudzi, 7, and threw her into a nearby well.
The attack happened while her mother, Diana Kamudzi, 38, was busy washing clothes, in return of a payment, at a house where Kufakunesu stays.
According to Diana, she left home with her daughter to look for part-time work.
She later found a laundry job, where she was allowed to bring the child along.
Diana said she left the child seated near a fire, which had been lit in the yard, while she did the laundry.
It is alleged that Kufakunesu hit the child once on the mouth with his fist before lifting her and throwing her into the well.
Chiedza began crying, while trapped inside the well, and Diana rushed over to investigate.
She then sought help from other people who used a rope to retrieve the child to safety.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the incident, saying the victim was retrieved without visible injuries.
“The police arrested a man believed to be mentally challenged for attempted murder in Tafara.
“The victim, who is a minor, has since been taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital for medical examinations,” said Insp Chakanza.
