The Meteorological Services Department has issued a fire season alert, warning of heightened risks of runaway veld fires due to dry and windy conditions.
In a statement, the Met Department said a relatively weak ridge of high pressure over Southern Africa is driving the current weather pattern, characterised by mild mornings, hot afternoons, and mild evenings.
“The combination of dry and breezy weather increases the risk of veld fires. We urge residents to construct fire-guards at least 9 metres wide around their premises.”
Tomorrow, the weather is expected to be sunny, hazy, and hot in Masvingo and Matabeleland South provinces.
“Mornings will be mild across much of the country, but temperatures will soar by afternoon, bringing sunny and hot conditions to the entire nation,” the department said.
“Masvingo and Matabeleland South provinces can expect hazy conditions to accompany the heat. As night falls, temperatures will dip to mild levels once again, offering some respite from the daytime heat.”
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, wear protective gear, and take necessary precautions to mitigate the effects of the heatwave.
“For prolonged hours spent outdoors in the sun, please take precautions against dehydration. Drink adequate amounts of water and wear a sun-hat. For better advice, consult a certified health practitioner,” the department added.
