Zimbabwe’s historic visit to Mexico has opened trade opportunities for both nations, especially in the areas of steel production, oil, agriculture and mining, Vice President Kembo Mohadi said.

Zimbabwe now boasts Africa’s biggest steelworks, the US$1,5 billion Dinson Iron and Steel Company in Manhize and can draw lessons from Mexico’s experience specifically in vehicle manufacturing.

In turn, Mexico, the second largest economy in Latin America with a GDP of US$1,5 trillion can benefit from Zimbabwe’s mineral resources, while also exchanging notes on the agricultural front.

Harare is also likely to benefit from the vast oil resources in Mexico which has a population of over 130 million people with an economy thriving on exports of vehicles, oil, agricultural produce, mining and tourism.

Speaking after witnessing the inauguration of Mexico’s first female President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday, Vice President Mohadi said the visit to Mexico has been an eye-opener.

“Mexico is interested in what we have as Zimbabwe, in our minerals and they are also good in agriculture. We would want to tap into that ourselves as Zimbabwe. We can also benefit as Zimbabwe from the oil industry from this country. We both need each other,” he said.

VP Mohadi said Mexico’s invitation is a clear indication that it is ready to deepen its relations with Zimbabwe.

“I think by inviting His Excellency, the President whom I am standing in for, it shows that they are prepared to work with us now. Mexico and Zimbabwe have a warm diplomatic relationship.

“Even though we don’t have an embassy here, they had an embassy in Zimbabwe which they closed in 1994 and they are covering Zimbabwe from South Africa. So we have got that relationship. We are here to broaden that relationship,” he said.

VP Mohadi added: “They need us and we also need them. So the relationship has been there and is there. It just needs to be cultivated a little bit further.”
