adminTHE arrest of two men who attempted to skip the South African border to Zimbabwe yesterday has sparked speculation that they are linked to the killing of Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa.
It is understood that the pair was found clinging to the base of a Zimbabwe bound truck by a South African customs officer during routine searches.
The customs officer is alleged to have alerted the police who found the two in possession of some stolen items.
The two whose nationality had not been ascertained by the time of going to press are yet to be charged by the South African police.
Sources at the border post said the two men looked similar to the Meyiwa suspects who appeared on identikits issued by SAPS.
They said the two had been taken to Polokwane for identifications pending transfer to Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni where Meyiwa, 27, was shot dead on Sunday night at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s house.
By midday yesterday the South African media was awash with the news linking the two men to Meyiwa’s shooting though the police were in denial.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto denied reports that Meyiwa murder suspects had been arrested at the border post.
“Nothing has been confirmed yet and there are no arrests,” she said.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Neville Malila told journalists yesterday that the story about the Beitbridge arrests were mere rumours.
“The rumours that someone was arrested at Beitbridge are untrue. No arrests have been made and no questioning had taken place.
Meanwhile, in Cape Town a 25-year-old man has reportedly appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court for the murder and robbery of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa.
According to Power FM the suspect made a brief appearance in court yesterday and is expected to be back in court on 11 November.
eNCA journalist Karyn Maughan tweeted that NPA confirmed that a man appeared for Meyiwa’s murder.
According to Sapa senior prosecutor Henk Strydom confirmed the arrest and court appearance to TimesLive.com, while eNCA identified him as Zanokuhle Mbatha.
“I can confirm that a suspect has appeared this afternoon (at the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court),” Strydom was quoted as saying.
“That’s all I can say at the moment, other than to add that the suspect in question has applied for legal assistance and the matter has been postponed to November 11.” — Beitbridge Bureau/News24/Sapa.
