ZIMBABWE’s duo of Caroline Mhandu and Bertha Chikanga were the toast of the host nation’s athletics team yesterday when they claimed gold and silver in the 3,000 metres event respectively. Mhandu romped home in 10 minutes, 01:46 seconds while Chikanga crossed the line in 10 minutes, 03: 96 seconds at the ongoing African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games.

The start of the athletics competition was nearly marred by heavy rains that pounded White City Stadium just after the morning sessions around midday.

Lesotho’s Mokulubeteles Makatisi was third in 10 minutes, 05:62 seconds. Another Zimbabwe medal hopeful Enlitha Ncube did not finish the race.

The day began with heats for men’s 100 metres and 400 metres T11, T12, T13 races before women took to the track in the 800metres T12.

Speaking earlier on, Team Zimbabwe athletics coach Lisimati Phakamile had predicted a sweep for the country in the 3,000 metres. Competition is expected to go a gear up as most finals, which will produce medals, are set for today.
