Mhlanga injury blow for Highlanders

HIGHLANDERS have been dealt a major setback ahead of the 2025 season as midfielder Honest Mhlanga has picked a serious ankle injury and looks set to be sidelined for a lengthy spell.

Mhlanga, who was promoted from the developmental side last year, had begun to make an impact with some strong cameo appearances during the previous season. He made his debut against Bulawayo Chiefs.

“Mhlanga will have a scan after picking up a knee injury last week during training.

“It’s a big blow for the lad, but we will not know the full extent of the injury until after the scan.

“He could have had a big breakthrough season. We just hope the injury is not too serious,” said an insider.

The talented midfielder, who began his football journey at a young age, previously played for local sides like Tigers of Makokoba in the juniors’ league and Ratanang (now Nkayi United) in the Zifa Southern Region Division One.

The news of Mhlanga’s injury could have been more devastating had Highlanders not narrowly avoided a transfer ban after businessman Wicknell Chivayo stepped in to settle a debt owed to former coach Baltemar Brito and his assistant Antonio Joao Torres.

The club was sanctioned by the Fifa Disciplinary Committee last week for failing to pay a $26,500 balance owed to the two coaches.

Chivayo agreed to cover the debt, and the payment has now been made, with the club confirming the settlement.

The club has lost key players during this transfer window, with Peter Muduhwa, Lynoth Chikuhwa, Godfrey Makaruse, and Marvellous Chigumira all going to newboys Scottland FC.

Highlanders have also released defender Andrew Tandi and midfielder Brian “Gaucho” Ndlovu.
