HIGHLANDERS Football Club is marching towards its momentous 100th anniversary next year, and chairman Kenneth Mhlophe firmly believes the Bulawayo giants are poised to lead a transformative era for Zimbabwean football.
Mhlophe has been nominated unopposed for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) vice-chairmanship in the upcoming July elections — a development he views not as personal elevation, but as a call for Highlanders to help steer the local game forward.
“I am thankful for the confidence and trust shown by my PSL peers. The nomination came from colleagues who wish to incorporate the experience and value of Highlanders into the leadership of the collective,” Mhlophe told Zimpapers Sports Hub.
Mhlophe’s unchallenged path to the vice-chair position comes at a time when Bosso have received a financial boost — US$250 000 from businessman Wicknell Chivayo — and are enjoying a solid start to the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League campaign.
That form stands in stark contrast to their traditional rivals, Dynamos and CAPS United, both languishing near the relegation zone after 14 rounds.
“There’s no doubt the top-flight league needs a strong Dynamos, a viable CAPS United, and a competitive Highlanders. It goes without saying that Highlanders are one of the anchor clubs of the Premier Soccer League and thus have a responsibility to contribute to the Zimbabwean football industry,” Mhlophe emphasised.
So far, the PSL chairmanship race includes Isaiah Mpfurutsa of Simba Bhora, Masimba Chihowa of Manica Diamonds, and Dumisani Sisale from FC Platinum.
Mhlophe is looking beyond titles — he’s calling for a collective renaissance of the league, with a push for new sponsorships and a more inclusive vision.
“The emergence of new clubs like MWOS and Scottland has brought some excitement to the league. This is good for the PSL. Ultimately, the league is a family. It’s a collective of 18 equals who rise and fall together. My role is to represent and accentuate the collective voice, energy, and effort,” Mhlophe noted.
Since assuming the Highlanders chairmanship in February 2024, Mhlophe has overseen a more stable era at the club.
Now, he’s ready to carry that calm leadership into the corridors of PSL power.
