MHONDORO-Ngezi Rural District Council has proposed a $5,4 million budget for 2018, a $1 million increase from last year’s. According to the Finance Committee statement, the increase in the budget will see installation of street lighting and construction of a primary school and a clinic at Turf Township to reduce pressure on existing utilities.

Council also plans to establish a dumpsite lining to improve waste management. Finance Committee chairperson Mr Batson Mukanyange said Mhondoro-Ngezi was undertaking revenue generation projects to achieve the $5,4 million budget target.

“It is envisaged that for the year 2018, council will raise income to the tune of $5 388 379,71 through various revenue drivers. The anticipated income will be allocated to council’s departments for utilisation in 2018,” he said.

By end of September, Mhondoro-Ngezi RDC had managed to collect $3 million against a target of $3,3 million, representing a 90 percent success rate. The bulk of the revenue came from rates, licences and taxes.

“Actual collections amounted to $3 million against a target of $3,3 million as at September 30, representing a 90 percent performance level against a comparative performance of 71 percent for the previous year,” said Mr Mukanyange.

“The bulk of the actual revenue collected was realised from rates, sales, licences and taxes, where rates raked in $348 000, sales brought a further $1 million and the remainder of about $677 000 came from taxes.”

In increasing the budget, Mr Mukanyange said council would maintain licensing fees and other taxes at 2017 levels.

Mhondoro-Ngezi RDC is one of the best performing rural local authorities in the country after winning several awards owing to its various income-generating projects, which have seen it managing to buy trucks and equipment, including rigs and a gold mill.
