Midlands Province have applied to the Zanu-PF leadership to have former Women’s League secretary for administration and war veteran Cde Esphinah Nhari accorded provincial heroine status. Cde Nhari (62) died on Friday night when a Mazda BT 50 in which she was a passenger collided head-on with a BMW near Kadoma. Zanu-PF Midlands deputy chairperson Cde Daniel Mackenzie said Cde Nhari was likely to be buried tomorrow.
“As a province we have made an application for her to be declared a provincial heroine for her contributions to the party but as of now there is no feedback,” he said. “Post-mortem was scheduled for today (yesterday) in Harare and then the body will be taken over by Doves Funeral Services. The provisional programme is that tomorrow evening (today) it will be taken to her home in Kwekwe where it will lie in state ahead of burial on Tuesday.”
The accident occurred when Cde Nhari was on her way to Harare from Kwekwe for her weekend classes as she was reading for a degree at the University of Zimbabwe.
She was rushed to Kadoma General Hospital and passed on when she was being attended to. Cde Nhari was a long- serving member of Zanu-PF and a war veteran who was trained in Zambia at Mukushi under Zipra.
Upon completing her military training she was assigned to the health department at the same camp.
She held several positions both in Zapu and Zanu-PF up to the level of national secretary for administration in the Women’s League and Central Committee.
Cde Nhari is survived by four children and seven grandchildren.
Mourners are gathered at W532 Amaveni, Kwekwe.
Cde Nhari was early this year given a vote of no confidence by the party after chanting the slogan “Down with G40” in Gutu during First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe’s meet the people rally.
She had appealed against the decision after the Zanu-PF Politburo established the National Appeals and Review Committee to hear cases of party cadres who feel they were unfairly booted out of the party.
