All is set for the inaugural Midlands Music Awards to be held tomorrow at the Midlands Hotel in Gweru.
The ceremony, which runs under the theme “Be The Change That You Want” is the first to honour artistes who hail from or ply their trade within the province.
Event co-ordinator, Mavis Koslek, who is also the brains behind the event said the idea of the awards was to recognise artistes from the province who are at times not recognised in other platforms.
“We noticed with concern that musicians, dance groups, drama groups, poets, authors and other artistes from the province have been lacking promotion and support.
“The Midlands province has a lot of talent that is in need of exposure for the nation to appreciate and as people in the arts within the province; we decided to come up with this idea of showing recognition to artistes, thus the birth of Midlands Music Awards.
“Our main aim is to promote our artistes in the province to gain better recognition throughout Zimbabwe, as well as regionally and internationally.
“MMA is going to be an annual award ceremony to acknowledge and honour musical excellence and creativity as well as provide a high profile and multi-faceted celebration of the rich cultural diversity of the Midlands province and subsequently Zimbabwe,” she said.
The ceremony should really be something to look forward to with artistes such as and Alexio “Good Child” Gwenzi being up for four honours while gospel musician Mathias Mhere has been nominated thrice.
Another interesting face-off will be in the Best Sungura Artiste category where Peter Moyo, Gift Amuli and Ronnie Mudhindo will square off.
Other categories include Best Radio DJ, Best Live Recording, Best Music Video and Best R ‘n’B amongst many others.
Indeed the Midlands province is known for producing some of Zimbabwe’s finest in as far as music is concerned with the likes of the late Paul Matavire, the late Tongai Moyo and Pio Farai Macheka being a few examples.
