A 207-STRONG member Midlands Youth Games team which went into camp at Chaplin High School yesterday has been announced. The 11th edition of this year’s Zimbabwe National Youth Games will be held in Bulawayo and will run from 17-25 August. The team is drawn from sporting disciplines such as athletics, football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, boxing and handball.
Among the medal hopefuls in the team announced are the boxing pair of Breland Tinago, son of former Commonwealth flyweight champion, Langton and Zvishavane High School’s Tawanda Gundungwa, football boys which is mainly dominated players from Zifa Central Soccer League side, FC Platinum Under-19.
In athletics long distance specialist Maryjoy Mudyiravanji who has qualified for the World Youth Championships to be held in Ukraine later this year and Thornhill High School’s Mubatowashe Mthombeni are among the medal hopefuls for the province.
Sport and Recreation Commission co-ordinator, Simon Masaka expressed confidence of a good outing after coming a disappointing seventh in the last games hosted by Mashonaland Central in Bindura last year.
Masaka said they were looking at finishing among the top three provinces this year.
“We are already in full swing in as far as preparations for the Games are concerned as the teams have gone into camp today (yesterday) as we step up our preparations for the Youth Games to be held in Bulawayo.
“This year we are hoping to retain our status of being among the top three sporting provinces in the country and therefore our aim at this year’s Games is to come first and if we fail we at least finish among the top three provinces,’ he said.
