Mthokozisi Ncube
A DARING teenager who thought the cover of night would hide his crime has been nailed after a midnight raid in Dete.
Artwell Ncube (18) of Lutope broke into a shop between May 20 and 25, forcing the door open with an unknown object. He grabbed groceries, airtime and US$50, totalling US$131.
But his luck ran out. The shop owner, who was inside, spotted him. Spooked, the teen fled, dumping some of his loot. Days later, the owner recognised him near his home and the thief bolted again.
Police moved in, and this time there was no escape. Ncube was dragged to Hwange Magistrates Court where he was sentenced to 12 months behind bars, wholly suspended on conditions. He must pay back ZWG 3 516.04 within six months and sweat through 110 hours of community service at Lutope Clinic starting August 21.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NAPAZ) urged shop owners to tighten security, use strong locks, keep little cash on site and report shady behaviour before it’s too late.
