THE Mighty Warriors stormed into the COSAFA Cup with a confident 2-0 win over Eswatini at Old Peter Mokaba yesterday.
They laid down an early marker with a performance built on control, discipline and big game composure.
Praynance Zvawanda broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, heading home a cross from vice-captain Christabel Katona to spark celebrations on the Zimbabwe bench.
Once ahead, the Mighty Warriors took charge, keeping possession with purpose and forcing Eswatini onto the back foot for long spells, though several chances went begging before the break.
Coach Sithethelelwe Sibanda turned to experienced forward Rutendo Makore after half-time and the move changed the tempo, giving Zimbabwe a focal point and allowing the midfield to squeeze space and cut off supply.
Makore then struck the second goal to cap a dominant spell and effectively put the result beyond doubt as Zimbabwe tightened their grip on the contest.
Eswatini’s night worsened when defender Ncedo Gamenze was sent off for handball, leaving them chasing shadows while the Mighty Warriors calmly saw out the match.
Katona’s tireless display earned her Player of the Match honours after she controlled the midfield and set up the opener.
Sibanda said her side had to be smart with their approach as they continue to build fitness.
“We needed to manage the game because they have speedy forwards and were using long balls, so we congested the middle and once we cut their supply they became disoriented and we scored,” she said.
She praised Makore’s impact and the composure of youngsters Bethel Kondo, Anita Ncube and Mcgirl Spini, who impressed on their competitive debuts.
The victory gives Zimbabwe a strong platform ahead of a heavyweight clash against defending champions Zambia on Sunday, a test that will show just how far this side can go.
The Mighty Warriors wanted a fast start.
