The stadium, which is based in the capital Montevedio, is now home to the Uruguay national team which finished the 2010 Fifa World Cup as the third best side.
The Mighty Warriors were on Wednesday hosted by the mayor of Maldonado and toured the resort Punta del Estete which houses the famous holiday and beach fronts homes for most celebrities in the world.
The Zimbabweans got a chance to see the holiday homes for France legend Zinedine Zidane and Uruguay international Diego Forlan.
The houses are occupied by their owners during the summer holiday from the period of December up to February and the tour guide said the famous players were here last month but have since returned to Europe.
The players also got a chance to sun bath on the beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, where they mingled with holiday makers from countries such as Argentina and Brazil.
This afternoon the team will be hosted by the mayor of Montevedio and the African ambassador who represents the interest of all the people from the continent.
During their tour of the stadium, the team will get to see the museum and learn all about the 1930 World Cup team and also learn more about the current generation of Luis Suarez and company.
The South American nation still prides itself in having hosted the first tournament, which had 13 countries participating, and winning the tourney.
They beat bitter rivals Argentina 4-2 with the Estadio Centenario filled to capacity with 93 000 people.
The Uruguayans were given the honour to host the first World Cup after winning the football tournament at the 1928 Olympic Games.
Thirteen teams seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North America took part in the inaugural World Cup tourney.
But Uruguay’s finest hour probably came 20 years later in Brazil when, against all odds, they beat the hosts, who were runaway favourites, to be crowned world champions.
Mighty Warriors technical advisor, Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe, believes the Mighty Warriors will return to South America for the 2016 Summer Games as they would have qualified for the football tournament in Rio de Janeiro.
“South Africa qualified for the 2012 Games and we believe this time around we will qualify as we have begun to prepare and we believe in Africa we are one of the teams which is doing very well,” said Jongwe.
“We just have to prepare and we have just started doing that now.”
Meanwhile, the Mighty Warriors were set to play Uruguay Under-20 team last night, with the match starting at 10pm Zimbabwe time. Tomorrow night they will round up their tour with another match against Uruguay.
