National school track, field champs on today

Track and Field championships.

NASH head-in-charge athletics, Apinos Chiwara, said they are using the competition to select a provincial team that will represent Harare at the inter-provincial track and field competition on March 22 and 23 at the same venue.

“We are holding the NASH inter-district competition at the National Sports Stadium’s main arena tomorrow (today).
“All the seven schools’ districts from Harare namely — Glen View /Mufakose, High Glen, Mabvuku/Tafara, Northern/Central, Warren Park/Marbelreign, Mbare/Hatfield and Chitungwiza are coming.

“So each team could be bringing an average of 100 athletes, meaning we are getting more than 700 pupils,” said Chiwara. Chiwara said the district teams were selected during the inter-schools competitions.

“Each district had its own team which was selected following the inter-schools competitions.
“We have been extending the invitations to all the athletes in the private schools and private colleges although some private colleges opt to participate elsewhere,” said Chiwara.

Chiwara said their competition today will see the running of a medley relay under a new format where five athletes take part instead of the usual four runners.

“This is the first time we are holding this medley under the new rules prescribed by the Confederation of Schools Sports Association for Southern Africa. Under the new rules, the first athlete will run 800m then the second will complete 400m and then third will pass the baton after 200m with the fourth running 100m.
“There will be a fifth athlete who will also run 100m and this kind of race was introduced this year so we are rather experimenting with it before the COSSASA championship which will be hosted by Zimbabwe in May,” said CHiwara.

Already six countries Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Lesotho, South Africa and Botswana — have confirmed taking part in the regional championships and Chiwara believes their competition today should be geared towards preparing for the Games.
