THE lawyer representing Economic Empowerment Group president, Mike Chimombe, says his client should never have been brought to court.
Yesterday, the State withdrew charges against the Harare businessman before plea.
He was facing fraud charges, together with Hermish Katsande, and Steven Chimombe.
The trio appeared before Harare magistrate, Dennis Mangosi, where the State applied for withdrawal of charges before plea.
The application was accompanied by an affidavit, from one Brian Marungamise, who had raised complaints against the trio.
In the affidavit, Marungamise stated that he was no longer interested in pursuing the matter as it had been settled out of court.
Dzvetero said the charges were flimsy.
“We had to explain and the court accepted and has exonerated my client,” the lawyer said.
“He is no longer facing any charges.
“Like what my client has always been saying, there was no legal basis whatsoever to have him brought to court on these flimsy charges.
“These charges were, in my client’s view, trumped-up by political rivalry and, like any lies, they had very short legs.
“It was meant to tarnish my client’s good social standing and good reputation and the court has accepted that and the charges that my client was facing were withdrawn before plea.
“My client is now a free man.”
The trio was being accused of allegedly misrepresenting that they were owners, and sellers, of a residential stand in Tynwald measuring 558 square metres.
Acting on the misrepresentation Marungamise had claimed he paid US$16 900 for the stand.
