THE Milton High School Sixth Form pupil who recently exchanged blows with his teacher has been excluded from the institution, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education confirmed yesterday.
Exclusion is when a pupil is barred from attending a particular school but is permitted to seek a place elsewhere to continue with studies.
Bulawayo Deputy Provincial Education Director Richard Swene yesterday said Malvern Nyangani, 18, will only be allowed to sit for his final public examinations at the school.
“The ministry does not condone such behaviour of pupils fighting with teachers. The boy has been excluded from Milton High School with immediate effect and will only be allowed to write examinations at the school if he behaves himself,” said Swene. He said the education authorities considered that he has a right to education and might be an emotional child who needed help.
“We wanted to give him a chance to complete his education elsewhere. We advise all pupils to respect their teachers,” he added.
Nyangani fought with Lawrence Ndebele, a Mathematics teacher after he had been reported by the school headboy for wearing gloves which were not part of the school attire.
Swene told Chronicle that Ndebele had been charged.
“Corporal punishment should not be administered on pupils. An act of misconduct has been brought against the teacher for violating ministry regulations,” he said.
Swene said that the teacher would appear before a disciplinary hearing soon. It was not immediately clear if Nyangani had secured a place elsewhere as his parents could not be reached for comment. Following the incident, Milton High School, suspended the schoolboy for 14 days, before the education authorities came up with the latest action. Nyangani has a history of being excluded from school.
In 2012, when he was in Form Five, he was excluded from Dangamvura High School and Mutare Boys High School within a term. He repeated Form Five at Milton High last year, only to be expelled again this year as he faces his final examinations.
