Milton Junior celebrates 101 years

The celebrations were held concurrently with a prize giving day ceremony at the school with heads from other schools in attendance.
Speaking at the occasion, the headmaster Mr Pettie Nyoni, said Milton Junior had a mission to develop pupils physically, academically, morally as well as socially.
“This is to enable them to participate meaningfully and actively at school and within their communities,” said Mr Nyoni.

He said the school had achieved a great deal because of teamwork between members of staff and parents.
“I would like to thank teachers at the school for maintaining good standards of work. I would like to register my appreciation for the sterling assistance from Milton Junior School parents,” said Mr Nyoni.

He said for the past nine years the school had registered good results in the Grade Seven examinations, which was a sign that it was striving to maintain excellence.
“Our pass rate average over nine years, that is from 2002 to 2010 is as follows, English 97 percent, Ndebele 92 percent, Mathematics 85 percent and General Paper 95 percent,” said Mr Nyoni.

Giving a brief history of the school, Mr Nyoni said the school was opened on 25 July 1910 by Sir William Milton and Lady Milton.
He said Sir Milton built schools, libraries and other educational facilities in the city.

“Sir William Milton built his own schools, Milton Junior, Milton High School and his wife’s school, Eveline High School,” said Mr Nyoni.
The deputy director for primary and early childhood development in the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture Bulawayo province, Mr Richard Swene, said he was happy to be part of the celebrations and called on parents to partner with teachers in educating their children.

He commended the authorities for the discipline at the school and encouraged them to continue the good work.
“At the regional offices we have not received any complaints about teachers or pupils from this school. This shows that the level of discipline at the school is high,” said Mr Swene.
The school has 25 teachers, 34 non-teaching staff and 1 095 pupils.
