Miner buried alive as shaft collapses

AN 18-year-old man from Kwekwe died on the spot after the mine shaft he was working in collapsed on Friday morning, police confirmed yesterday.The man has been identified as Bonwell Chigumbu.

Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident happened at around 10am at Homestacks’ Globe and Phoenix Mine.

He said: “Chigumbu was taking logs underground on Friday morning when the mine shaft collapsed and buried him.”
Insp Mahoko said the incident was witnessed by the man’s brother, Wilbert Chibango, 43.

“Efforts to rescue Bonwell failed and his body was only retrieved seven hours later,” he said.
