Miner crushed

A Mimosa Mine employee died after he was crushed by a rock that fell from the roof of the shaft while he was barring loose rocks with an earth moving machine underground.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday at around 3pm when the company’s Face Preparation supervisor, Mr Eric Mukazi was crushed to death by a rock that fell from a loose mine shaft roof while he was working underground.

Mr Mukazi’s mandate was to ensure safety for workers working underground by barring bad hangings and removing all loose hanging rocks. Mimosa Mine management confirmed the incident saying the mine was conducting a full scale investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

In a press statement, the platinum mining company said this was the first fatal accident that occurred at their mining site in more than five million shifts.

“It is with great sadness that Mimosa Mining Company advises an underground fatality involving one of its face preparation supervisors, Mr Eric Mukazi which occurred on the 24th of August. In line with the company’s safety policies of attaining zero harm in all its operations, Mimosa is conducting a full scale investigation to determine the cause of the accident.”
