Miner dies after falling into disused mineshaft

around 3am on Monday.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident adding that the injured were taken to Chegutu district hospital. “A man died and seven others were injured in Chegutu when the unregistered miners were sleeping around a fire when the ground suddenly collapsed and they landed in a disused mineshaft that was underneath,” he said.

They were trapped in the mineshaft until other miners who were nearby heard distress calls and came to the rescue of the injured.

Chambwa had already died and the others including Takesure Lunga (35), Nkosilathi Gwavira (22), Ernest Banda (35), Andrew Danger (32), Weddington Mbano (30), David Chagonda (31) and Never Phiri were rescued alive.

They were taken to Chegutu hospital where their condition was reportedly stable while Chambwa’s body was also taken to the same hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
