A MINER, who was extracting gold ore with other employees in a mine shaft about 100 meters deep, died after being electrocuted.
The incident happened at RODYBOYS Mine at around 3pm on March 25.
At around 2: 40 pm, one of the employees outside the shaft wanted those in the shaft to drain water using a water pump.
He dropped an electric cable and advised them to connect the water pump.
Unfortunately, 21- year- old Blessed Kanongota , who was part of those working underground, got in contact with live cable, resulting in his electrocution.
Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector, Ian Kohwera, said electricity was switched off but it was too late to save Kanongota.
“ He was lifted outside but unfortunately succumbed to the electrical shock,” he said.
Kohwera said the mine manager, Mostaf Sayemu(54) was advised and a police report was made at ZRP Chinhoyi Rural.
Police attended to the report and Kanongota’ s body was ferried to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital mortuary for a Post Mortem.
Kohwera said investigations are still underway to establish cause of death.
He urged miners to ensure safety precautions, such as wearing protective gear and following electrical safety protocol, as they are essential to prevent electrocution in various settings, including homes and workplaces.
“Those found on the wrong side of the law will be arrested, “ warned Kohwera.
