A miner from Penhalonga has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of murder.

Tendai Afonzo of Village 7 Domborutinhira in Penhalonga, was found guilty of fatally stabbing Luckmore Dziire on October 1, 2024.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, Afonzo, who was armed with an okapi knife, met Dziire at Domborutinhira Business Centre and launched an unprovoked attack on the latter inside a local shop.

He stabbed the victim multiple times before fleeing the scene. Dziire, a well-known community member who struggled with mental health challenges, was later discovered by residents lying in a pool of blood on a shop veranda.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that he died from hypovolemic shock caused by severe blood loss.

The NPA emphasised the seriousness of the offence, stressing the need to protect vulnerable members of society and to discourage violent crime.
