“As ZMDC we are forming the Mining Promotion Corporation to do exploration for us.
“Doing this would ensure that we get proper geological information about the Marange area and other areas,” said Mr Masimirembwa.
ZMDC is pursuing a number of mining ventures in the country including diamond mining in Marange and is also set to revive the defunct Shabanie Mashava Mines.
The inception of the exploration company by ZMDC would complement mining explorations that are being undertaken by the private sector, albeit to a very minimal extent.
The Government through the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development is also pursuing the formation of its own exploration company to be known as the Zimbabwe Mining Exploration Corporation (ZMEC).
It is expected to start operating soon as Cabinet has already approved its formation.
Zimbabwe has vast untapped mineral resources whose quantity is unknown as there has been no major exploration work done in recent years.
The absence of extensive exploration work over the years has created a situation where most of the local underground minerals remain untapped
Thus formation of exploration companies remains critical for Zimbabwe if the country is to account for its entire mineral wealth.
Analysts contend that having adequate geological data about the country’s entire mineral resources would also help Zimbabwe reap maximum benefits from her mineral wealth. — New Ziana.
