TWO men – Charles Mombe (24) and Knowledge Ndunduma (28) – lost US$3 600 to armed robbers in Mutare central business district.
The incident occurred on Tuesday around 8pm as the victims searched for a kombi to take them to Sakubva Bus Terminus.
It is alleged that the two armed suspects in a parked grey Toyota Corolla approached the victims along Second Street, near Choppies Supermarket.
The robbers forced Mombe and Ndunduma into the car at gunpoint.
Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said Mombe and Ndunduma are miners from Goromonzi, unfamiliar with Mutare.
They were en route to their rural homes in Chipinge, each with US$1 800, which was kept in Mombe’s wallet.
“Mombe and Ndunduma were forced into the vehicle at gunpoint, and the suspects drove off toward the Mutare-Chimanimani Road. One of the armed suspects then searched the victims and took US$3 600 that was in Mombe’s wallet,” he said. Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said the victims were dumped near Plyport Service Station, where they sought assistance from the security guard on duty.
Mombe and Ndunduma were escorted to ZRP Sakubva to report the incident.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged members of the public to avoid carrying large amounts of cash, cognizance of the recent surge in robbery cases in Manicaland.
