More than 200 chess players converged in the capital yesterday for the fourth edition of the Minerva Zimbabwe International Chess Open tournament where the company committed to partner Zimbabwe Chess Federation on a long-term plan.
The four-day chess tournament roars into life yesterday at Joina City, attracting players from all over of the country and parts of Southern Africa.
Minerva Risk Advisors group chief executive officer, Lydia Tanyanyiwa, who was the guest of honour at the official opening of the tournament, revealed that the company was committed to building more of a long-term partnership with the local chess federation.
“We are very happy with how the tournament has grown over the years, and we are committed to seeing it grow bigger. We want to reiterate that as long as the funds permit, we are going to continue sponsoring the Chess Open.
“We are committed to building a long-term partnership with ZCF, and ensure that we play a part in the development of the sport, both locally and internationally,” said Tanyanyiwa.
With a sponsorship of more than US$ 7 000 being availed for this year’s edition, ZCF secretary general Todd Mapingire was over the moon with the gesture and commitment extended to the federation by Minerva Risk Advisor.
“We are grateful for the support that you have given us and we are looking forward to working with Minerva in the development of the sport in the county,” said Mapingire.
The winner of the Chess open in the male category is expected to walk away with US$1 100 while the female winner will walk away with US$1 000.
Last year’s winners, Jemusse Zhemba and Kudzayi Charinda, will be gunning to retain their titles.
